Crystal Bailey and Daishawn Franklin founded WALK in 2009 in an effort to give local aspiring models and designers the chance to shine. WALK strives to provide the perfect platform to the needs of many locally based models, designers, store owners and the Michigan fashion community. WALK is the largest fashion show in the midwest, in Lansing and Detroit held bi-annually. Shows have been held in iconic locations across the state, including the Charles H. Wright Museum, Detroit Opera House and the Detroit Rooster Tail.

“We just wanted to provide a platform for local talent to be showcased across the world,” Franklin said. “You don’t have to go to New York to see a fashion show. It’s right here, right now, and that’s what WALK is all about.”

I have personally been blessed to have the opportunity to work alongside Bailey and Franklin as an intern, who have become my family.

Bailee Dai Agency was founded in April 2013 launching a model behavior clinic, 7 Basic Guidelines on Building a Successful Modeling Career.

The event was hosted by Naima Mora, model and author of the book “Model Behavior”.

Models had the opportunity for a hands on professional mini photo shoot, which they received two photos for their portfolio. They had a personal portfolio review with Mora and discussed strengths and weaknesses of their current portfolio. Mora provided basic runway modeling tips and gave demonstrations. All models who attended the clinic also received a autographed copy of “Model Behavior”.

66th Festival de Cannes

66th Cannes Film Festival

The opening of Cannes Film Festival was filled with press conferences, red carpets, photo calls and interviews with the stars. Carey Mulligan was there wearing Dior to represent Baz Luhrman’s film, The Great Gatsby. Dior took center stage in the wardrobe department. Raf Simons designed the ravishing haute couture creations worn by four ladies at the opening ceremony. Nicole Kidman, Carey Mulligan, Zhang Ziyi and Julianne Moore were all dressed in style and elegance for the event.

The Great Gatsby starlet, Carey Mulligan wore a Dior Haute Couture blush matte satin duchesse gown during the opening ceremony. This dress looks stunning on Mulligan especially with the pop of red lipstick making a fashion statement full of elegance.

Zhang Ziyi

Zhang Ziyi

Zhang Ziyi wore a Christian Dior embroidered tulle bustier dress in pink velvet and Haute Couture blue slim wool trousers. Actress Zhang Ziyi is one of the jurors for this year’s Cannes Film Festival. With one red-carpet event after another, she most likely came prepared with an extensive wardrobe. Every event she has seemingly had a different hairstyle for each appearance. Her styles have ranged from a stylized pixie look, a pulled-back chignon and a sleek updo. Here is a view of the stars change-up dos.

The Cannes film festival, the world’s largest, draws thousands of movie stars, industry executives and journalists to the fabled resort on the Mediterranean. Jewelers and fashion houses use the annual event as a promotional showcase, lending gowns and accessories to celebrities who are photographed on the red carpet and at parties along the palm-lined Croisette waterfront. When word broke out that a safe holding $1 million in Chopard jewels went missing, it was very ironic. The same evening Sofia Coppola’s new movie “The Bling Ring”, about a gang of celebrity-obsessed teens who break into stars’ homes to steal their possessions, premiered at Cannes.

The news was so timely it practically seemed like creative guerrilla marketing.

What do you think? Was it was planned?

2013 BBMA

2013 Billboard Music Awards

The 2013 Billboard Music Awards took place Sunday May 19th at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez stepped out onto the blue “red” carpet in a summer-ready Atelier Versace dress. Gomez had a ’90s raver chic look in a white column dress that was accented by bright neon (pink, lime green and yellow) contrast piping, silver zipper detailing and clear plastic paneling over a jigsaw, cross-body cut-out. She wore a light pink lip gloss and a ponytail that looked fancy yet efforless. The 20 year old singer/actress preformed her new hit single, “Come & Get It” at the show.

Taylor Swift and her 3.7 million-selling song, “Red,” dominated the 2013 Billboard Music Awards, taking home eight trophies. Swift was honored as Top Artist, Top Female Artist and Top Billboard 200 artist. Swift received the night’s top honor, Artist of the Year, as well as Top Billboard 20 Artist, Top Female Artist, Top Country Artist and Top Digital Songs Artist. “Red” was Tops in the Billboard 200 and country albums categories; her “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” was named Top Country Song. Cheers to Swift and her accomplishments in the industry thus far.

A Day in the Life of A Dior Addict

Once again my crazy addiction for Dior leads me to another private event. I felt like Audrey Hepburn in the opening scene of the film, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, as she fantasias in front of Tiffany & Co. Although it is not extravagant jewels that I am dreaming about in this case, it is the House of Dior’s luxurious cosmetic line. The cosmetic line is not in many women’s discretionary income, but it is definitely affordable to obtain pieces of their magnificent collection.

Dior’s national makeup artist, Jonathan Ader, was in Michigan in May of 2013 for a workshop held at the 12Oaks Macy’s Dior beauty counter. Ader is a Chicago native and an expert on skincare and cosmetics. I was fortunate enough to attend the event and bring a guest as well. The red carpet led way to the presentation given inside Macy’s, which held 30 Dior addicts like myself enjoying appetizers and refreshments taking note of every beauty tip. Ader gave great advice on how to apply makeup for each individual and taught us how to create our own signature look.

Christian Dior “Secret Garden 2 – Versailles”

AD CAMPAIGN RELEASED

Christian Dior “Secret Garden 2 – Versailles”

On May 3, 2012 Dior released a video entitled “The Secret Garden” on YouTube which went viral. The advertisement for the fall 2012 collection had over 17 million views at launch and the extended version that was released two days later had over five million views.

The accompanying print campaign is supposed to debut in Vogue China this weekend. The advertisements will be in Italian Elle, as well as Korean and French Vogue later this month. The “Secret Garden 2” project was encouraged by the overwhelming response to the mini film and campaign that launched a year ago.

These ads are a sneak peak of what we will be seeing in the 2013 campaign. Dior is unleashing a second installment depicting another dreamy escapade filmed at Versailles, this time in a foggy forest not far from the Petit Trianon. Dior addicts are anxious to see the new campaign and undoubtedly know that the Secret Garden fairytale will be spectacular. The one-minute film is expected to be released in June on the DiorMag and dior.com.

“Nasty Gal” Naughty in Name Only

Nasty Gal? What’s That?

It may be last years news, but it sure is something worth talking about when it comes to public relations. Nasty Gal, an eBay page that sells vintage women’s clothing, sold nearly $100 million of clothing and accessories last year in profit. The name itself has heads turned when heard, but not to the half a million Facebook followers and over 600,000 followers on Instagram. For over seven years, Nasty Gal has courted a following of women in their 20’s, but many people still don’t know about one of the fastest-growing retailers in the country and can’t help but give a strange look when they hear “Nasty Gal.”

So how did Nast Gal come about? Why wasn’t more thought put into the name?

Sophia Amoruso was a 22-year-old college dropout, living in her step-aunt’s cottage and working at an art school checking IDs for $13 an hour in 2006. She decided to quit her job and start a side project one day on eBay. The eBay page, “Nasty Gal” was named after the 1975 album by Betty Davis and the webpage ultimately turned into a multi-million dollar business. I’m not sure that Amoruso regrets quitting her job at all when she looks back.

My first thought was…where did she get all the inventory to sell?

Amoruso bought a Chanel jacket at a Salvation Army store for $8 and sold it for $1000. She also found YSL clothing online for cheap by searching out items with misspellings, reasoning that if someone didn’t know how to spell Yves Saint Laurent, then they were most likely unaware of the items value. Sounds like Amoruso jumped on the thrift shop band wagon early which surely paid off.

Amoruso styled, photographed, captioned and shipped each of the products herself, selling about 25 items per week. After having friends model and photograph her products, she outgrew her step-aunt’s cottage and moved to a 1,700 sq. ft. studio in Berkeley, CA to headquarter Nasty Gal in 2007. Within the first year, Amoruso had to move headquarters again to a larger space in Emeryville which exceeded 7.500 sq. ft. Ms. Amoruso also outgrew eBay and launched ShopNastyGal.com to accommodate the amount of sales and anticipated growth.

In 2011, Nasty Gal headquarters was moved to LA to be closer to merchants and models. The “Nasty Gal Creative Studio” office space was relocated to downtown Santa Monica, CA. In March of 2012, Armoruso gave Index Ventures a slice of equity for $9 million. With the continuance of rapid sales growth and expansion, other competitors are keeping an eye on Nasty Gal for potential acquisitions.

Nasty Gal has no marketing team, but fans continue to follow and keep up with them on their FacebookInstagram, TwitterTumblr and Pinterest feeds.

2013 Met Gala

New York’s Metropolitan Museum Met Gala

Punk: Chaos to Couture

As it has every year since 1948, New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art welcomed the prestigious Met Gala. This is one of the fashion world’s most important events. The event was held on May 6 of 2014 which was the opening of the new exhibition Punk: Chaos to Couture.

Jennifer Lawrence went for a decidedly more sedate look at the 2013 Met Gala. Lawrence, the “Hunger Games” star chose to forego the Gala’s “punk couture” theme and opted for a retro Dior Couture gown that held a sophisticated look with a 1950s silhouette and netted veil.

Is it really surprising that the Oscar-winner chose to wear the elegant Dior dress? Not so much. Lawrence is the face of Miss Dior and is feature in the French couture company ads everywhere.

Marion Cotillard, another familiar face in Dior ads is wearing a blush and nude Dior look.
